RARE ENGRAVED Hopkins & Allen, also marked Merwin Hulbert & Co., Model First Model Spur Trigger Pocket, CAL: 38, MFG: 1890's, SN: 4034, Single Action Revolver, 3 1/2'' round barrel, 5 shot. This is a rare First Model, with NO LOADING GATE. Notice instead of a loading gate, it just has an open hole, which proved deficient at keeping cartridges in cylinder. Only a few hundered were made like this before they changed to a loading gate variation. Out of those few 100 or so of the rare early models, this one is very rare as an engraved example. Very nice swirls, vine & pounch dot hand engraving. The top of the barrel is marked ''Hopkins & Allen'' but has been mostly worn thin. Left side of frame is marked ''MERWIN & HULBERT CO NEW YORK U.S.A'', right side of the frame is marked with the caliber. The original dogs head & checkered hard rubber grips are excellent. The original nickel finish rates 70% overall, with small areas of dullness, edge flaking, light brush marks & spotting. Bore is good, with pitting amongst the visible rifling. Factory sights. Action & cylinder timing appear to function properly. This was used by N.Y. taxi driver in the 1920's -30's for in-cab protection. Part of the wear to the nickel & address Is due to being stored under the seat & rubbing against the seat bracket. Kind of a neat history & VERY RARE PISTOL!
