FANTASTIC Henry Repeating Rifle, First Variation, .44 Henry Cal., MFG: 1864, SN: 4272 Lever Action Rifle, Designed by Benjamin Tyler Henry & produced by the New Haven Arms Company. Henry's were used in the Indian Wars & by the Union during the Civil War. They were favored for their greater fire power than standard issue carbines, though at $30 to $40, they were a very expensive option in their day. This first third to mid SN range rifle still retains first variation rifle characteristics such as the pronounced ''Henry Drop'' profile on the rear of the receiver & the three flats on the receiver ring (receiver bridge) immediately behind the receiver & barrel joint. On this example, the original wood stock is excellent & solid. The stock displays a near perfect ''Henry Bump'' on the left side just under the sling swivel. The original wood finish is excellent, with very few, very minor dings, scratches or contusions consistent with light period use. The wood fit to metal is excellent, with no shrinkage or gaps. The complete serial number is stamped into the upper wrist channel of the inside of stock. The metal finish on the 24'' barrel has toned to an even chocolate brown patina, with visible remains of blue in protected areas like the side grooves. There are some light surface freckling, but no real pitting or rust. The brass frame & buttplate both appear uncleaned, with a beautiful brown mustard patina. Buttplate has a hinged trapdoor were an original 4pc hickory cleaning rod would be originally stored, although not currently present. Bore is very good, with minor areas of pitting amongst strong rifling. The rifle has a nickel silver front sight blade & third style folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard notch at the top of the leaf. Present are the typical sling attachments on the left side of the stock & barrel. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the slightly larger style legend: ''HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860 / MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT.'' in two lines forward of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight & the receiver. Matching SN's are stamped on the inside of the buttplate & on the left side of the lower tang beneath the wood. The two buttplate screws are correct stamped with the full SN on the shank. The hammer, lever & trigger are case-hardened, although the case-color has mostly worn away & developed a brown patina. The hammer has borderless knurling on the spur. All screws fit & line up correctly, are not buggered & all appear original. A truly fantastic original rifle & proper piece of gun history. While it is reported that as many as 14,000 Henry rifles were produced. Production of the Winchester 1866 rifle was SN intermixed starting around 12,000, so some speculate fewer than 14,000 were actually produced. With such a low production total & their heavy use during the Civil War, Indian wars & Western frontier movement, any Henry rifles is always highly collectable, but especially when found with all SN matching parts & in unmolested excellent condition such as this rifle presents.
