Description

WONDERFUL ENGRAVED Winchester, Model 1866, Third Variation, .44 RF Cal., MFG. 1870, SN: 41795, Lever Action Rifle, 20'' Round barrel, Full mag. This is a wonderfully engraved 1866, in the period style reminiscent of the early Winchester patterns done by John Ulrich, L.D. Nimschke, Gustave Young, & the Young sons & family of engravers. Gustave Young came to the United States in the 1840s. He was Colts primary engraving contractor from 1852 to 1869. His shop also served other clients in the area during this period. In the late 1860s, he moved to Springfield, Massachusetts where he began taking in work primarily from Smith & Wesson. He also continued to service his previous clients. There are examples of Gustave Young & his family's hand on Colts, Smith & Wesson's, Sharps, Bullard's, Peabody & Martinis, & Winchester. He practiced his craft until his death in 1895. Gustave Youngs two sons continued engraving, with Oscar becoming S&Ws Master Engraver. The engraver of this rifle signed his work ''J. YOUNG'' behind the trigger on the receiver. It is unknown if J. Young is of the Gustave Young & Sons family of engravers, but the Germanic scrollwork & style is reminiscent of their work. The receiver is extensively embellished with highly detailed Germanic/acanthus scrolls, floral & leaf designs & a game scene. The game vignette on the left side features a large buck deer standing amongst a forest. The engravings are also found on the tangs & top of the buttplate. The original straight grip wood stocks are very good & solid, having been lightly sanded & reoiled long ago, while retaining numerous minor scrapes, scratches & contusions to the aged & darkened finish. The metal surfaces have worn mostly gun metal gray, with a thin gray/brown patina developing amongst, minor pitting, abrasions & metal scarring. The brass receiver & buttplate display an even aged patina. The bore is good, but with scattered roughness & pitting amongst strong rifling. The barrel carries a rollover two leaf rear sight & pinched blade front sight, which has pitting on the barrel & mag band portion of the sight. The stock carries a carbine style sliding trapdoor brass buttplate, which is stamped ''17 G''. The underside of the buttplate is stamped with the last four digits ''1795'' of the SN. The upper inside tang channel of the stock carries a SN stamping, of which the last three digits ''795'' are legible. The left side of the lower tang under the wood is stamped with the letters ''C'' (for carbine) & ''M'' (inspector's mark). A truly wonderful & aesthetically sharp engraved 1866 rifle.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 25000 to 35000
