Description

RARE 101 RANCH Winchester, Model 1892 SRC .25-20 WCF Cal., MFG. 1908, SN: 420494, Lever Action Rifle, 20'' barrel, Full mag.

HISTORY: This is a Miller Bros. & Arlington 101 Ranch Real Wild West Show Rifle. This 1892 carbine is stamped on the left side of the receiver. ''101'', which is supposed to indicate this was part of the inventory of guns used during the 101 Ranch shows. The 101 Ranch was a 110,000 acre cattle ranch in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma before statehood. The ranch was owned by the Miller brothers & the next door neighbor was Major Gordon W. Lillie, who performed as Pawnee Bill. He motivated the Millers to produce a Wild West Show of their own. The Millers made their transition from putting on local shows to the national scene in 1907, when they performed at the Jamestown Exposition in Virginia. Later in 1907, the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show began the tour circuit in Brighton Beach, New York. This rifle was produced & purchased in 1908, shortly after the ranch started touring. Joe Miller, the eldest son, was an exceptional equestrian & star performer. Over the course of the show's history, its cast included Lillian Smith, Bill Picket, Bessie Herberg, Bee Ho Gray, Tom Mix, Jack Hoxie, Mexican Joe, Ross Hettan, Wenona the sharp shooting Indian girl & even an elderly Buffalo Bill.

DESCRIPTION & CONDITION: The original wood stock & forend are good & solid. The stocks have been lightly sanded & reoiled, yet still retain all the numerous nicks, dings, scrapes & contusions you'd expect from constant use in the Wild West shows. There is sliver of missing wood from the left upper edge of the forearm & a glue repaired hairline crack at the forend tip. The metal blue finishes have worn fully to gun metal gray, with a thin brown patina in protected areas. The barrel is a long ago factory replacement, as it carries both the oval ''WP'' stamp & the oval ''P'' stamping, which is supposed to indicate the barrel was replaced at the factory. This is not surprising that the barrel would be replaced based on the amount of rounds & blanks fired during the 101 shows. Its not likely their firearms were cleaned consistently & the barrels on these guns would eventually become shot out & heavily pitted. Bore is good, but with some roughness amongst thinned rifling. The rifle is mounted with a Lyman flip-up tang sight, which is reverse mounted to allow the hammer to fully cock while the sight is folded. The barrel has a rear dovetail blank & a pinned brass blade front sight. Stock carries a carbine metal buttplate. This carbine has excellent eye appeal having authentic frontier & ''101 RANCH'' show wear & use. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1500 to 3000
