Description

RARE PROTOTYPE Remington, Model 16 Take-down, Marked .22 REM AUTO Cal., MFG. 1916, SN: None (RARE non-serialized factory prototype), Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' Tapered round barrel. This rifle came out of the Remington Factory Archive & Museum Collection, along with another rifle serial #2, which was sold in the previous auction. This was literally the first rifle produced & was not serialized as it remained in the factory collection until the powers to be sold many of the firearms in the Archive Collection. This model was Remington's first production semi-auto .22 rifle produced 1916-28. Just 17,720 were manufactured during the 13 yrs. of production. The .22 Remington Auto fired a 45 grain bullet approximately 950 feet per second, with 90 lb. ft of muzzle energy. Due to the larger diameter of the case, the cartridge is not interchangeable with the .22 Short, Long or Long Rifle. The reason for the unique cartridge was to prevent black powder .22 cartridges (which the standard .22 S, L, & LR were originally) from being fired in this gun. Black powder doesn't work well in semi-auto guns (another reason the semi-autos arrived on the scene around the time of the adoption of smokeless powder). The original factory wood stocks & finish on this example are excellent, with some minor finish level scuffs or handling marks. The original factory metal blue finish rates 99% overall, with a bit of speckled loss mid barrel. There are two tiny pin holes on the left side of the receiver where the factory brass ID tag once resided, but is no longer present. The trigger retains some of the factory ''cautionary'' red paint which was placed on many of the factory archive & prototype guns, although most of it has worn off or been removed. There is also the outline remains of a factory ID sticker that once resided on the forend just above the receiver. Bore is excellent. Factory sights. Rare opportunity for Remington collectors to purchase a Prototype rifle from the factory collection, which remains in original & highly collectable condition. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 3000 to 6000
