Description

Robert S Garden, 4 Ga Shotgun, CAL: 4 bore, MFG: 1870's-1910's, S/N: 19562, Break Action Single Shot Shotgun, 42 1/8'' barrel. Garden Name was know as army accoutrements makers & saddlers around the 1700's to about the 1890's. they were involved in the sale of such items, as well as firearms & swords to officers, the Indian army, & some regiments of the east Indian company. They went through many trade names throughout the years. The whole company was started by Hugh Garden with the trade name Garden at 200 Piccadilly London. When his son Robert Spring Garden joined him the name switch to Garden & Son. Hugh Garden passed in 1851 & his son would carry on the business as Robt.S.Garden. Later on, the business would change location to 29 Piccadilly London. Robert Garden passed in 1919. this company only has mentions & photos of dealing with military weapons & other items for the military, there is not mentions or photos of sporting commercial guns with their marking, making this possibly a very rare & unique firearm. The straight wrist, checkered wood stock & forend are excellent as being fully & professionally restored. presents very nicely. The forend has a horn cap. The metal as also been fully restored with the frame being re-blued & the Damascus pattern on the barrel being very prominent & vivid. The top of the barrel is marked ''ROBT.S.GARDEN.29. PICCADILLY.LONDON''. The barrel has a set of older British proofs, as well as a more modern set of British proofs that date from 1954-89, likely when this gun was restored they also had it proofed so they could go fire it. The bore is very good. Its bright & mirror like with one small spot of light pitting. The barrel holds a small bead front sight. The stock has no buttplate, but it has the European style checkered butt end. A very unique & beautiful looking Large bore shotgun. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 4000 to 8000
