J&W Tolley makers, 8 GA Shotgun, CAL: 8GA, MFG: 1883-87, S/N: 6753, Break Action Single Shot, 33 3/4'' barrel. The semi-pistol grip, checkered wood stock & forend are excellent with only a few small nicks, dings, & dents. The checkering is slightly worn but still present. The forend has a horn cap piece. The barrel retains about 75 % of its bluing with spots of thinning, brown patina, & gun metal gray showing. The receiver has been worn white with spots of gray patina. The top of the barrel is marked ''J & W TOLLEY MAKERS. I .CONDUIT ST. REGENT ST LONDON .W.'', the marking is worn down & faded making it hard to read, the barrel has another marking that reads ''SHOOTING IMPROVED BY W.W. GREENER. BIRMINGHAM'', this marking is a lot crisper & appears to be newer than the first barrel marking. The gun has two sets of proofs, one set of proofs that date 1875-87 & one set that dates 1954-89, both British proofs. The lock plate is marked ''J. & W. TOLLEY.''. The bore is very good. Its bright with some light roughness. The barrel holds a bead front sight. The stock carries a leather cap with a spacer buttplate. Shotgun has no sling mounts. J & W Tolley Gunmakers was established around 1859 in Birmingham, England, & they would open a shop in England in 1883. By 1879 they gained a reputation for making high quality, large bore shotguns & rifles. The WW Greener marking on the barrel is certainly interesting as I could not find much mention of guns with this type of marking. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 4000
