Description

RARE DALE ROBERTSON'S ''TALES OF WELLS FARGO'' TV series & Movie prop gun. Make: H. Richards, Model Hammer SXS, Cal: 12 ga., MFG: 1890's-1910's S/N: 149263, Break Hammer SxS shotgun, 18 3/8'' barrels.

This shotgun was often featured in the series ''TALES OF WELLS FARGO'' by the star Dale Robertson during its run on NBC from 1957-1962. Dale played the lead role of Jim Hardie, an agent or trouble shooter for Wells Fargo, who was tasked with protecting both people & cargo. The shotgun is stamped on the left side of the stock ''W.F. & CO. EXP. 126'' adding to its authenticity of a ''Wells Fargo'' gun for the series. The shotgun was originally a Stembridge rental gun & is marked with the company's ''S'' on the bottom of the receiver & twice on the inside water table of the receiver under the barrels. As such, the gun likely appeared in many a Western movie before its time on the Dale Robertson series. Dale took possession or ownership of the shotgun after the series ended. In the notary public signed document included in this lot, he indicates it was part of his personal collection, which he used in the filming of many of his Western movies & television series. Dale Robertson was a well know Hollywood actor whose career spanned six decades from the 1940's through the 1990's. Dale entered the Hollywood movie industry after his military service in WWII ended. His first movie role was ''The Boy With The Green Hair'' & in 1947 he had his first major role in ''Flamingo Doad''. During his career he starred in 62 motion pictures & made an additional 430 hours of television including the many TV series he starred in & guest appearances. In addition to the shotgun, the lot comes with a framed & hand signed Limited Edition Silver Screen Series Dale Robertson poster #46 of 500. It also comes with a binder of prominence, which includes the aforementioned notary public document, also includes a signed black & white promotional photo of Dale holding the actual shotgun while standing in front of the movie's W.F. Express engine. Additionally, there is a signed photo of Dale, in later years, again holding shotgun while attending the Tulsa gun show. There are photos of six images of the gun included in the binder pointing out some of the features & markings. There is also some additional images & printed research about Dale, his extensive military service during WWII, the TV series ''Tales of Wells Fargo'' & a filmography listing of his career.

Shotgun Condition: The shotgun has all the authentic character of a firearm that would have been used on the actual Wells Fargo Express & the Western frontier. The original wood stocks are good & solid, despite having been broken at the wrist & very nicely & professionally repaired. The stocks display numerous small scratches, nicks, dings & edge clips you would expect from its decades of Hollywood use, including the broken & repaired wrist, which is ironically very common on actual Wells Fargo used shotguns. Much of the original checkering has worn smooth & oils have likely been added to the finish. The metal finishes have fully toned to a fairly even brown patina. The receiver, receiver end of the barrels, side plates, trigger guard, hammers & parts of the forend all carry hand engraved scroll & decorative border engraving. The pistol grip cap has been lost from the stock, while the belly of the stock is inlaid with a silver shield. The stock also carries the original widow's peak metal buttplate. The bores are good, with the barrel rib holding a single front bead. This shotgun is being sold & valued as a movie prop gun & for its prominence & not for its functionality as a firing weapon, as we do not test fire the guns. While it was obviously a functioning weapon before its movie use, age, use & condition dictates that it should be a display piece today. The release lever, triggers & hammers all appear to function correctly, but we have noticed at least the right side firing pin is broken or missing.

This is a fabulous & well documented firearm from the golden years of Hollywood Westerns. Again, the lot includes the firearm, along with the hand signed limited edition poster, pictures & binder of prominence. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 2000 to 4000
