J.P. Clabrough & Bros, Hammer Double, CAL: 8GA, MFG: 1872-73, SN: 2, Break Action SxS Shotgun, 35 5/8'' Damascus barrels. J.P. Clabrough & Bro's was one of several English manufacturers Winchester worked with for importation & distribution of European shotguns through Winchester's NY office. Only 10,000 double shotguns were imported & distributed, with this fine & rare gun possibly being one of those guns from this manufacturer. It is a very early & rare example, as only the 2nd (SN 2) produced to be used on Safari hunts in Africa. Capable of firing both 8 ga shot shells & 8 bore rifle cartridges, it perfectly equipped the hunter with the means to take down any large game. These guns were also used by professional meat hunters to harvest numerous birds in a single shot from large flocks. The checkered round knob wood stock & forend are excellent. The rear portion of the buttstock has been lightly sanded, with added protective oils & the forend appears all original. The checkering appears to be untouched on both the stock & forend. The stocks have contusions, scratches & scrapes. The receiver, side plates, trigger guard, hammers, break lever, barrel ends & forend metal components are all intricately hand engraved with ornamental scroll work. Both side plates have dog & bird game scenes. The Damascus pattern on the barrels is faded, but visible, fully toned to brown patina. The case-hardened frame has fully worn to metal gray & toned to a brown patina. The side plates appear to have been blued, with remnants of blue on the right side plate. Bores are excellent, with visible light wear. The solid rib holds a beaded blade front sight. Stock carries a factory J.P.C dogs head checkered buttplate. This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase a rare & finely crafted, antique European double break firearm for your next African elephant hunt & large flock Canadian snow geese hunt. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 6000
