Springfield Armory, Model: 1873 (/84), Cal: .45-70, MFG: 1880, S/N: 124985, Trapdoor breechloader, 22'' barrel. The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with light nicks, dings, dents, & wear from use/age. Stock has darkened slightly from oil/age. ''31'' marked on bottom of wrist at the back of the tang. The metal has been re-blued, & as such rates 85% overall with scratches & spots of wear, metal has very faint rust speckling. The breech block was originally case hardened, it has been buffed & blued. Top of barrel is marked with a ''V'' over ''P'' over a eagles head, all three marking are buffed/worn, barrel is also marked with a faint ''R''. Rear of receiver is marked with the S/N, S/N is worn/buffed down & parts of it are hard to read. Top of breech block is marked with a eagles head over two crossing arrows over ''US''. Above the eagles head should be a marking of ''MODEL'' over ''1873'', the very top of the ''MODEL'' marking is visible but the rest of both markings is buffed/worn away. Lock plate is marked with a US eagle & ''U.S.'', ''SPRINGFIELD''. Lock plate has spot of bluing, brown patina, & gun metal gray. Bore is good. Bore is bright with light roughness & very light pitting in spots, amongst thinned rifling. Barrel holds a blade front sight with a Buffington rear sight, this is the updated 1884 rear sight. Stock carries a steel trapdoor buttplate that marked ''US'' on the upper tang. There is the original 3 piece cleaning rod set inside of the buttstock. Rifle has a side slung saddle ring sling mount. This rifle would of originally had a, elevation adjustable only rear sight, but it now has the 1884 model, Buffington rear sight & the barrel band that matches it. With the stock retaining no inspectors cartouche or a firing proof this rifle could have been a commercial build with surplus parts done back in the 1890's/1900's or it could just be all original & just have the markings worn away. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 450 to 900
