Springfield armory, Model: 1884, Cal: 45-70, MFG: 1889, S/N: 468693, Trapdoor breechloader, 33'' barrel. The straight wrist walnut stock is excellent, with minor dings & wear. Left side of the stock is marked with the ''SWP'', ''1889'' in a box cartouche, this is the inspector mark for Samuel W. Porter who was the Master Armorer and Chief Inspector of Springfield Armory from September 1879 to June 1894. bottom of wrist is marked with the 'P'' in circle cartouche, which is the firing proof stamp. The blued metal finish rates 98% with only light spotting near muzzle. Breech block has worn but still intact & visible case hardening. Top of the barrel is marked with a ''V'' over ''P'' over a eagles head, ''R'', ''P'', ''A''. Rear of receiver is marked with a worn but still visible S/N. top of breech block is marked ''US'', ''MODEL'', ''1884''. Lock plate is marked with a US eagle & ''U.S'', ''SPRINGFIELD''. Bore is excellent, bright & mirror like no visible wear. Barrel holds a circle on post front sight with a protective hood, the protective hoods are original & were provided to the troops on a special request basis from their officers. Barrel also holds a Buffington rear sight that's marked 2 to 20. stock carries a blued steel buttplate marked ''US'' on the upper tang. Rifle has bottom sling sloops with the forward stacking sling loop. This rifle appears to be a very rare all original ''survivor'' that only has very slight wear, certainly a very rare find.
