Description

E. Remington & Sons, Model: Post 1874 Spanish Model South American Contract Rolling Block, .43 Spanish, MFG: 1840's-80's, S/N: 1406, Breech loading rolling block, 35 1/2'' barrel. There was only four country's that ordered this model of rolling block rifle & marked them with a S/N in the spot on the receiver where this one is marked, & they are all in south America. The country's are Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, & Uruguay. The straight wrist wood stock is very good with numerus nicks, dings, dents, & wear from use. There is a ''RC'' marking hand etched into left cheek of stock. The case hardened finish still covers the whole receiver but has thinned & faded over the years with areas of patina setting in, & areas of light pitting in spots. The blued finish on the barrel rates 75% with areas of thinning, gun metal gray, brown patina, scratches, & light rust speckling. Many spot of the barrel still retain beautiful deep bluing. The right side of the receiver is marked with a S/N. the upper tang is marked ''E.REMINGTON & SONS ILION.NY USA'', & the list of patents. All three barrel bands are marked with a ''U'' on the left side. Bore is excellent. Its bright with only a few small spot of very light roughness. The barrel holds barleycorn front sight with a stepped tangent/ladder, wide U-notch to a deep fine V-notch, rear sight base is marked 1 to 4, ladder is marked 6 to 10. stock carries a smooth steel buttplate with areas of grey patina. Rifle has both bottom sling loops. Rifle is missing its cleaning rod. All most all south American & Spanish rolling blocks are in pretty worse for wear condition, from heavy/long use & rust/pitting, & the set of four southern American country contract rifles are the typically no different, other than the Uruguay contract rifles, the weather & humidity conditions of Uruguay are better than the other three leading to them being in better condition, at least the surviving examples are all in pretty good condition, making me believe this is a Uruguay contract rifle. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
