ROF Maltby, Model: No4 Mk1 SMLE, Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1942, S/N: G16400, Bolt action rifle, 25 1/4'' barrel. The semi-pistol grip, 2 piece wood stock is excellent with only a few small dings & scratches, there is a 1 1/4'' by 1 5/8'' spliced in wood stock repair at the top rear of the buttstock. There a many faint & worn crown, number & letter proofs & stamps on the bottom of the wrist, S/N is stamped in the bottom front of the stock. The metal was re-finished when it when through a full factory refurbishment in 1947. how the metal finish process went with these rifles is that the metal was bead blasted or tumbler finished, then it was phosphate, & then painted over & cured with a Sunkorite paint. The black paint finish rates 95% overall with minor wear. The left side of the wrist band is marked two downward facing arrows, ''M'', ''1942'', & S/N, the left receiver flat is marked ''NO4MK1(F)FTR/47'', & the S/N that is stamped over a ''NO4MK1'' marking. The receiver also has many other proof stamps. The Bolt & magazine are S/N Matched to the rifle, but the magazine is missing the follower & magazine spring, & is completely empty. The bore is very good. Its bright & mirror like with strong rifling, but it has a small spot of pitting/roughness at the top of the barrel near the muzzle. The barrel holds a wide blade front sight with protective ears, & the rear of the receiver has a two position, flip up ladder, aperture rear sight, the ladder is marked 2 to 13. the stock carries a smooth brass trapdoor buttplate, with nothing inside the stock. Rifle has both bottom sling loops, & comes with a period correct rubber core canvas wrapped ''ersatz'' (Substitute) sling that has hardened from age & would be impossible to remove from the rifle without cutting. Rifle also comes with a No4 Spike bayonet with its sheath. Overall a really nice example of a early MFG, the refurbished No4 Mk1 SMLE. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 350 to 700
