Description

Waffenwerke Brunn (Czech), Model: G33/40, Cal: 7.92x57mm, MFG: 1941, S/N: 4451b, Bolt action rifle, 19 1/2'' barrel. The G33/40 is the German modification to the Czech VZ. 33, during their occupation of Czechoslovakia during WW2. The VZ. 33 was a shortened version of the already short rifle VZ. 24. it is a Small Ring action meaning the receiver was slightly smaller in diameter then the standard GEW98 action, this was done to lighten the weapon at the expense of leaving the action just slightly weaker. But the rifle still takes a standard GEW98 style bolt. The Germans would make use of this already shortened & lightened rifle & modify them for use with their Gebirgsjager (Light Infantry) alpine troops, since they wanted a shorter & lighter rifle that was easier to move around with up on the mountains. The Germans added a front sight hood to protect the sight, added a extra steel plate on the stock around the buttplate to reinforce/protect the stock. They added a firing pin disassembly disc in the stock, added a sling well for use with German slings & changed the bayonet lug for use with their own bayonets. The semi-pistol grip Laminated stock is very good as having a few cracks. Left side of wrist has a 3'' tight repaired crack that emanates from rear of trigger guard. Two tight repaired cracks on rear of the upper handguard, both about 1'' long. One emanates from rear sight & one emanates from the front of the receiver. These crack repairs look professional & were likely done at a arsenal. The blued metal finish on the receiver rates 35%, the receiver band has been worn completely white with thinned, worn bluing remaining on the mid/rear sections on the receiver. The blued metal finish on the barrel rates 65% with areas of wear/thinning. Left side of receiver is marked with German Waffenamt proof mark, S/N, ''G33/40''. Top of receiver band is marked ''7.88'', ''dot'', ''1941'', right side of receiver band has a set of three Eagle proof marks, the two worn but legible ones are a eagle over ''63'', one proof is too worn down to read. The bolt is S/N mismatched. Bore is very good. Bore has strong rifling with light roughness inside the grooves. Barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with protective hood, & a tangent V-notch rear sight marked 1 to 10. stock carries a steel cupped buttplate that left in the white. Rifle has side sling mounts. Rifle has its cleaning rod. A very nice example of a Rare, well used German Mountaineer rifle. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 2500
