WaffenFabrik Bern, Model: M1878/81 Vetterli, Cal: 10.4x38mm Swiss Rimfire, MFG: 1878-81, S/N: 172033, Bolt action Rifle, 33'' barrel. The Swiss Vetterli rifle was the most advance military rifle ever adopted at its time of introduction in 1867. Designed by Johann-Friedrich Vetterli, the rifle is credited with many firsts including, a bolt action with duel symmetrical locking lugs, when most bolt action military rifles at the time locked off the root of the bolt handle & not even have one locking lug. It was also the first repeating bolt action to have a self-cocking action, to have a small caliber bore, duel firing pins, & the first standard issue intermediate round. All this & it was one of the first military rifles to be fielded with a magazine. The straight wrist wood stock is excellent as being sanded & refinished. Stock only has a few nicks & dings. The bottom of the stock, behind the lower tang is marked ''S'', ''D3'' cross ''C1'' all in a box. The metal has been completely re-blued with either gold or brass inlays inside some of the markings. The Blued metal finish rates 99%. The left side of the receiver is marked with a cross, ''WAFFENFABRIK'', ''BERN'', S/N, & ''M.78''. The left side of the barrel is marked with the S/N & other proofs. All other serialized small parts on the rifle are S/N matched. The bolt was ''Jeweled'' when it was restored. The bore is very good. Its bright with strong rifling, but has some light roughness near the muzzle. The barrel holds a short but wide blade front sight with a tangent U-notch rear sight with a sliding leaf for further adjustment which was part of the 1881 upgrade. The base of the rear sight is marked 225 & 3 to 12, the extending leaf is marked 13 & 14. the stock carries a smooth steel buttplate. Rifle has two bottom sling loops. Rifle has its cleaning rod. A very nice & professionally restored rifle. Antique No FFL Req - Value: 300 to 900
