Description

RARE & OUTSTANDING, Colt, 1871-72 Open Top, CAL: .44 RF, MFG: 1871-72, SN: 3249, Single Action Revolver, 7 1/2'' barrel. Highly sought after by collectors for its limited production & significance as the first Colt revolver manufactured specifically for a metallic cartridge, the Model 1871-72 Open Top Revolver is the transition model between the Colt cartridge conversions & solid frame Single Action Army revolver. The Navy style select burl walnut grips are excellent. There are minor contusions & scrapes to the varnish finish. With appx. 7000 produced, & about a third of the production with Navy grips, making this example rare. This revolver comes with a Colt Factory Letter, stating that the type to stocks are ''Not Listed''. The term ''Not Listed'' was used at the time when referring to wood. The original nickel finish rates 80% overall. The Colt Factory Letter also states that the original type of finish on this revolver is listed as ''Blue''. According to the historian that authenticated & appraised this revolver, he said ''The factory letter lists our subject revolver as shipped with a blue finish. This is the result of a factory error when this revolver was entered in the ledgers. I have examined Open Top revolvers shipped with a blued finish, case-colored hammer, blued trigger & screws. This is not one of them. With this revolver completely disassembled, I have inspected each & every part under bright lights using a loop.'' Regarding the current state of the finish, he mentioned, ''This Colt was stored for some time in a holster, probably a ''Slim-Jim'', as these holsters fit snug to the weapons they were made for. The result of this caused some flaking of nickel on the barrel, ejector housing & both sides of the frame. Some scrapes are apparent on these parts, caused by an effort to equalize the flaking.'' The historian also states ''this is all matching & void of any sings of repolishing of having been refinished. Close inspection of the nickel finish, all markings, a near perfect Naval engagement scene & all numbers void any attempt of alteration.'' The SN is correctly marked on the barrel, barrel wedge, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder, cylinder arbor & in the channel cut of the burl walnut Navy grip. The bore is excellent & bright, with strong lands & grooves. Small notch rear sight & blade front sight. This revolver comes with a Cody Factory letter & a two page letter from David J. Palmiter Authenticator, Appraiser & Historian, confirming the current configuration, condition & date. Their heavy use on the Western frontier & limited production run has made the Model 1871-72 one of the most difficult Colt revolvers to find in any condition. This is the finest example of a Colt Open Top 1871-72 that we have ever seen & it is worthy to be included in the most advanced collection of rare Colt firearms.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 12000 to 27000
