Description

OUTSTANDING, Colt, Model of 1911 U.S Army, CAL: .45, MFG: 1913, SN: 24417, Semi Auto Pistol, 5'' barrel. The original diamond checkered wood grips are excellent, with minor handling marks. The metal blue finish rates 95% overall. There are areas of thinning, beginning to tone to a brown patina, but still with full coverage. The concentrated loss of finish is on the front edges of the frame & front of slide, most likely from being holstered. Bore is very good & bright, with consistent light roughness. U-notch rear sight & blade front sight. Lanyard loops on the butt & magazine. The left side of the slide is marked with standard patent & address dates, as well as the Rampant Colt logo behind the slide serrations. The left side of the frame is marked ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY'' & ''WPC'' inspector mark above the mag release. The right side of the slide is marked ''MODEL OF 1911 U.S ARMY'' & in two lines ''COLT AUTOMATIC CALIBRE 45''. The left side of the frame is marked ''No.24417''. The front strap of this pistol has very unique markings. A father & son, two generations of soldiers who served in WWI & WWII, carrying the same sidearm. The top inscription reads ''CAPT. S. BRUCE ELWELL 1917-1918'' & below that his sons inscription ''CAPT. ALCOTT F. ELWELL 0-108092''. It is very rare that a sidearm such as this makes it through one world war, let alone two, & to be carried by a father/son gives this pistol a ton of character. This pistol comes with a Colt Factory Letter, confirming current configuration, that it was sold to the United States Government & shipped in a shipment of 500 to the Commanding Officer at the Sprongfield Armory on March 14th, 1913. We attempted to find more information about this family, but failed to find anything of substance. An outstanding example of a WWI Colt 1911.* FFL or C&R Req - Value: 5000 to 7000
