Description

RARE!!! French Mauser (SVW), Model: P.38, Cal: 9x19mm, MFG: 1946, S/N: 4541K, Semi-Auto pistol, 4 7/8'' barrel. The Mauser factory was liberated from German control in April of 1945 & was handed over to the French army to control. At this time the French army was in desperate need of firearms, & there were many P.38 parts laying around along with the machinery to make more, so the French army decide to take advantage of this & started producing P.38 pistols for their own use. They used a mix of parts of what was laying around so they had some still marked with the earlier ''byf44'' code but the majority of them are marked ''SVW45'' & ''SVW46''. The French army did not change any codes or remove any previously applied German proofs or stamps. The French also continued using the German serial number System on the parts that were already made & on new made parts. The French made pistols started in May of 1945 in the G serial block, and were making about 10,000 pistols a month. The French applied a new rough black phosphate finish over the older German finish so some markings could be hidden on previously stamped parts. Production ended in 1946 from increasing protest from the Allies mostly from the soviets for using German designed pistols & not allied designed ones. These pistols were constructed mainly with the spare parts left over at the factory with only a few new made parts. The early pistols were made with wooden grips but most of the French built ones have the unique sheet metal grips like the one here. The grooved sheet steel grips are very good with only light scuffs & scratches. The black phosphate finish rates 90% with light scratches & wear/thinning in small areas. The left side of the slide is marked ''P.38'', ''SVW'', ''46'', & S/N. the right side of the slide is marked with a French proof star. The left side of the frame is marked with the S/N, a eagle proof, ''BH''. The right side of the frame is marked with faint import marks. The front of the barrel lug is marked with the S/N. the front bottom part of the frame as well as the bottom of the beaver tail by the hammer is stamped with a big ''15''. This is likely a police rack number since many of these were used by French police agency's after they left the French army. The bore is excellent. Bright & mirror like with almost no visible wear. The barrel holds a wide blade front sight, while the rear of the slide holds a U-notch rear sight. This pistol comes with one 8 Rd. newer Walther magazine. A very unique pistol with a interesting back story. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 3000
