Alexander Henry, Model Drop Block Hammer Rifle (Best), CAL: 450 Black powder Express, MFG: ca. 1885-95 Antique, SN: 7043, Lever Drop block Rifle, 22'' barrel. Alexander Henry of Edinburgh was one of the the pre-eminent European rifle maker in the mid to second half of the 19th century. Henry patented his drop block rifle in 1865 & of its type, it was by far the most successful & commonly encountered rifle of the era. Henry offered the rifle in three qualities, BEST, SECOND & THIRD, with best quality pre-dominating. These Henry rifles are quite magnificent in terms of their quality, engraving & construction, & secured his reputation along with the very high numbers of double rifles built. Alexander Henry offered his drop block rifles in a variety of calibres from the massive .577 big game calibre to the diminutive .360 rook calibre. However out of all the calibres, the .450 3 1/4 '' Black Powder Express round was by far the most common suitable for deer stalking at home & sport abroad. Alexander Henry worked closely with he Superintendent of The Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, Edward Boxer (1819-1898) & designed the new .450 cartridge that was straight, 3 1/4'' long & filled with 4 drams of black powder propelling a 320 grain bullet. Various other loads could be used & this Henry cartridge remained the standard for most of his rifles both single & double until the advent of cordite & smaller calibres at the close of the 19th century.
On this rifle, the original checkered & capped pistol grip walnut stocks are excellent. They feature fantastic contrasting grain & the original finish, with minor contusions & use marks. The case-hardened receiver, lever, hammer, trigger guard, upper tang & buttend plates all feature dense coverage of scroll, decorative & border hand engraving, which are nicely accented by mutted remains of case-colors. The metal blue finish on the barrel rates 85% overall, with the top of the barrel engraved ''ALEX.R HENRY LTD. MAKERS TO HER MAJESTY. EDINBURGH AND LONDON.'' The barrel holds a two-leaf rear sight on a raised base, along with a long blade on raised base front sight. Bore is excellent. The buttend wood is hand checkered, with protective hand engraved top & bottom plates. An overall fantastic hand crafted rifle, which is also a true piece of both history & art. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 6000
