Rare & ENGRAVED Remington Custom Shop Rifle, Model 8 D Grade, .25 Rem Cal (marked 25-35 Rem), MFG. 1909, SN: 13355, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' barrel. Although this rifle fires a .25 Rem rimless cartridge, it carries the original early & rarer .25-35 caliber marking. Remington tried to utilize the 25-35 marking to take advantage of the popularity of Winchester's 25-35 caliber. They were quickly forced to change their caliber marking to .25 Rem on later examples, as these rifles would not accept the rimmed 25-35 cartridges. This makes this early caliber marked rifle even rarer beyond it being a factory engraved example. This rifle, invented by John Browning, was America's first successful semi auto high-power rifle. These take down rifles were often broken down into the 22'' & 20'' halves & placed into travel cases for train rides to countryside hunts & shoots. This special order rifle has a round pistol grip, high grade English walnut stock & forearm. Stocks are very good, with nice figure to the grain & factory hand checkering at 22 lines-per-inch. There are numerous minor to small scuffs, scratches & contusions & a thin 1/2'' hairline crack to the underside of the forend. The stocks appear to carry the original finish, with likely some added protective finish or oils added over time. The original metal blue finish rates 80% on the receiver, 65% on the barrel, with loss on barrel from due to thinning & toning on the backend from honest carry wear. The receiver side panels are covered with what Remington marketed as ''rich scroll hand engraving''. Engraving is also found on belly of magazine, safety, trigger guard, tangs & barrel jacket. Bore is very good & bright. The receive is fitted with a Lyman tang sight, while the barrel carries a standard adjustable rear & a rarer beech folding globe front sight with ivory bead. Stock carries the original checkered Remington plastic buttplate, but rifle was custom ordered with a shorter than typical 12 3/4'' LOP for likely a shorter stature individual. 5 round fixed magazine. Tight action & appears to function as it should. A beautiful & rare engraved rifle made even rarer & more collectible due to desirable caliber & early rarer caliber marking. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 3500 to 5500
