Description

Remington, Model 8C (Deluxe), marked .300 SAVAGE Cal., MFG: 1917, SN: 79879, Semi-auto take-down rifle, 22'' barrel. It is likely this rifle began life as a 35 REM caliber rifle. In 1936 Remington felt the model 8 needed a facelift & introduced the model 81, which was little more than a minor cosmetically changed model 8. A few short years later, in 1940, Remington released the model 81 in 300 Savage caliber. This caliber proved very popular amongst many big game hunters. As a result, some model 8 owners chose to return their rifles to the factory to have them swapped to 300 Savage. This was done with very little modification or adjustment to the rifle other than swapping the barrel for a 300 SAV barrel. The left side of the barrel shroud would have been stamped with a repair/upgrade code, which this rifle was not. It is therefore likely the owner had their local gun shop order the barrel from Remington to do the modification there. The original deluxe checkered & straight grip wood stocks are very good & solid. The inside of the forend is stamped with a ''3'' for grade ''3'' or ''C'' grade, & also carries the matching stamped SN. They stocks display upgraded grain & hand checkering cut at 20 lines per inch. Being an earlier production rifle & a C grade, the stock carries the cheeks at the wrist. The stocks have been lightly sanded & nicely refinished, without wood loss. There are minor scrapes, scratches & contusions to the finish, & there is some smoothing of the checkering at the carry points. There is a missing sliver of wood at the left back corner of the forend & a tiny edge chip at the toe of the stock.. The belly of the stock has an inlaid brass presentation plate engraved ''TOM 1911''. The original metal blue finish rates 85% on the barrel, 80% on the receiver. The barrel carries a rectangular based folding rear sight, while the front dovetail is missing its sight. Bore is very good, clean & bright. Stock carries the Remington UMC plastic buttplate. 4 rd fixed magazine. Tight action. A rare & very nice ''C'' grade deluxe rifle, which has been updated to 300 Sav, making it desireable to both hunters & collectors. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 2000
