Thomas Barnett-Richard Wilson, Trade Gun ''London Fusil'', Percussion converted, Cal: 20 Ga, .62 Cal, MFG: Circa 1800s, S/N: None, Percussion converted flintlock musket, 36'' part octagon barrel.
HISTORY: This is a early made Northwest trade gun. They were typical made for the Indian fur trade in exchange for beaver pelts, but they were used by lots of people for hunting & self defense. This was has a Thomas Barnett lock, & a Richard Wilson barrel. Thomas was a prominent London gun maker from the turn of the 19th century. Richard Wilson was another prominent London gunsmith from the 1760s-90s. The gun was converted to percussion sometime in the 1830s-40s. Early Full stock guns like this are quite rare, most were made with half stocks to make them lighter, handier & cheaper. Lots of them were down later or have been lost to time. This gun appears to be a Indian fur trade gun, they were made smaller & lighter for the smaller Native Americans.
CONDITION: The straight wrist Walnut full stock is good with two approx. 1 1/2'' grain pops/cracks on the bottom of the forend, just in front of the trigger guard tang, & two more approx. 1 1/2'' grain pops/cracks on the left flat of the stock, by the side plate escutcheons. Toe repair with nail reinforcement. The cheeks & belly of the stock is darked from added oils, gun & hand/face. The barrel & lock has toned to a dark brown patina. there is roughness/pitting on the rear of the barrel & lock. All markings on the gun are faded/worn from rust/cleaning. The rear of the barrel is marked with a crown over ''P'' in a oval proof, ''*'' over ''RW'' this is for Richard Wilson, & a crown over ''V'' in oval proof. The top of the barrel is marked ''LONDON''. The lock plate is marked ''T'', ''BARNETT'', this marking is heavily worn & barely visible. The brass trigger guard is engraved with a star/snowflake symbol, & the upper extension of the buttplate is engraved with an eagle. These engravings are found many Thomas Barnett & Richard Wilson trade guns. The bore is poor. It is bright but has lots of roughness & a good amount of pitting. The barrel holds a heavily worn bead front sight. The stock carries a brass buttplate with ding marks & patina. gun has no sling mounts, comes with a wooden ramrod. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 600 to 2000
