Description

St. Etienne, Model: Fusile DInfanterie Mdl 1840, Cal: .71, 18mm, MFG: 1840s, S/N: None, Percussion smoothbore musket, 42'' barrel.

HISTORY: thousands of French made muskets would be imported to the United states during the Civil war. The Union would order a contract for 25,000 rifles & the confederacy order thousands more. They were mostly used in support roles as they were considered a ''third class'' arm. They would see some front-line use with Militias & with confederate troops.

CONDITION: the straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. The wood has shrunk over time & the metal is proud to the wood in spots. The French cartouche on the left cheek is mostly worn away with only the outline visible. The dog wood plug in the middle of the cartouche is marked ''M.R.''. The metal has toned to a brown patina with areas of roughness. The lock plate is marked ''MRE.RLE'', ''DE ST.ETIENNE'', & a French proof. The rear of the barrel is marked with many French proofs, ''Cde 18''. The top of the barrel tang is marked ''MLE 1840''. The barrel bands have proof marks. The bore is poor, dark with rust & pitting. The barrel holds a blade front sight with a fixed notch rear sight. The stock carries a steel buttplate. covered in brown rust patina. The rifle has both bottom sling loops & the ramrod. Antique/muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 700 to 1400
