RARE!! Westly Richards, Model: Portuguese Monkey Tail Cacadores rifle, Carabine 11mm Para Cacadores M/1867, Cal: .450, MFG: 1867, S/N: P1091, Capping Breechloader rifle, 33'' barrel.
HISTORY: Portugal ordered 8,000 of these short rifles for their ''Cacadores'' (Hunters) units in 1867. They were the elite light infantry of the Portuguese army. These would be their standard arm until they adopted the Snider converted P53 Enfield rifles in 1872. Replacement would be slow & some units would use these rifles for many years after 1872. These were pushed to the Territorial army's once they were replaced by the sniders or possibly sent to colonies, & the rest were put in storage.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various nicks, dings, & scratches. wood has shrunk over the years & the buttplate is proud to the wood at the toe. The left flat of the stock, above the trigger, is stamped ''FA'' over ''1881''. The ''FA'' is if for ''Fabrica de Armas'', the date it was returned to the arsenal to be re-furbished, put into storage &/or sent out the Territorial army's. The metal has a arsenal re-blue with spots of roughness under the finish. The blued finish on the barrel rates 90% with a couple scratches, spots of light wear on the muzzle, scattered light patina, & a few spots of light rust. The Lock plate is bare steel, has speckled patina. The top of the breech is marked ''WESTLEY RICHARDS'', ''PATENT'', & a triangle, markings are worn & partially gone. The left side of the chamber is marked with multiple British proofs & the S/N. The top of the chamber is marked ''70 GRAINS'' & a small proof, markings are slightly faded. The rear of the barrel is marked ''.483'' & ''.480''. Just in front of the rear sight, the barrel is marked ''WHITWORTH PATENT'', marking is worn & barely visible. The lock plate is marked ''1867'' in a triangle, ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO''. the inside of the breech block has two ''5'' stamps. The barrel band is marked ''657'', marking is worn. The bore is good. Its bright with roughness & spots of light pitting. The barrel holds a small barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 1 to 4 (markings are worn), & the ladder is marked 5 to 10. The stock carries a brass buttplate, has patina & small ding marks. The rifle has both bottom sling loops & comes with the cleaning/ram rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 3000
