Description

Remington, Model: Springfield model rolling block, Cal: .58 CF MFG: 1870s-80s S/N: NVSN, Breech loading single shot rifle, 39'' barrel.

HISTORY: This Rolling block is made from a surplus .58 Cal muzzleloader barrel & mating it to a rolling block receiver. This was done by the military for testing, but more community on the commercial market. The US market was flooded with surplus muzzleloaders from the civil war as the advent of metallic cartridge guns made them obsolete. Many of them were bought by companies & gunsmiths & turned into cheap breechloaders for hunters. A lot of them were made with Rolling block receivers, as they were sold separately from Remington & were very strong. This was most commonly done with Springfield muzzleloaders, so the name Springfield model Rolling block was made. Springfield Arsenal also produced their own Rolling block receivers & mated them to surplus barrels, so it also came from this. In the Army Navy Journal from 1876, Springfield model rolling blocks are listed as being sold by Remington in this exact configuration for $13. The rifle here is a civil model either made by Remington or was a Bought rolling block receiver that a gunsmith made to a musket barrel.

CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist walnut stock is good. The stock has various nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. Chips & two cracks on the right side of the forend, between the middle & front barrel bands. The buttstock has some fitment issues around the wrist tangs & where it meets the receiver with gaps. Metal is proud to the wood on spots around the buttplate. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & dark patina. The metal is covered with roughness/pitting scars, more prevalent around the stock line on the barrel. The upper tang address marking is almost entirely worn away with faint outlines remaining. It is the older two-line address. The bore is fair to good. Its bright with some roughness & one spot of pitting. The barrel holds the original musket sights & is a small barleycorn front sight with a three leaf flip up, V-notch rear sight. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned to a dark patina with pitting scars. Rifle has three bottom sling loops & has a muzzleloader ramrod in the place of a cleaning/clearing rod. The rifle also comes with a Model 1855 socket bayonet. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 600 to 1200
