RARE!! Remington, Model: 1879 Argentino Rolling block, Bill Wescombe Conversion, Cal: 11x58mmR Mannlicher, MFG: 1879-82, S/N None, Single shot breech loading rifle, 36'' barrel.
HISTORY: This Argentino Rolling block comes from a set of rolling blocks re-chambered to 11mm Mannlicher by the famous rolling block expert William (Bill) Wescombe. As stated by George Layman in his boom ''Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World'', these conversions were done by Bill around 1958 since him & a friend bought a nearly full pallet of like new, 1914 vintage REM-UMC 11mm Mannlicher ammo. These were done to make cheap ammo shooter rolling blocks for him & his friends since good .43 Spanish ammo was getting harder to find. Its estimated that 300 to 650 rifles & carbines were re-chambered. Each was stamped either ''11mm MANN'' or ''.43 MANN'' to indicate the re-chamber.
CONDITION: the two-piece straight wrist walnut stock is very good near excellent. Stock has some light nicks, dings, & scratches from use/age. There are five faint tally marks on the bottom of the wrist. The metal has worn or has been buffed to gun metal gray. Metal has scattered light patina. the upper wrist tag is marked ''E.REMINGTON & SONS'' their address & patent dates. The left flat of the chamber is marked ''11 MANN'', marking is faded, & ''B''. the top flat of the chamber is marked ''MODELO ARGENTINO. 1879. E.N.''. The right chamber flat is marked ''RA'' in a circle (Republica Argentina). All barrel bands marked ''U'' on the left side. The rear sling loop is marked ''PATd FEB. 11th, 1868''. The bore is very good. Its bright & shiny, strong rifling but with spots of roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight marked 1 to 4 on the base & 5 to 11 on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate, gunmetal gray with spots of patina. The rifle has both bottom sling loops & has the cleaning/clearing rod. The rifle comes with the correct M1879 bayonet & sheath. Brass handle & has quillon. Ricasso is marked ''MARCA DE FABRICA'' over a knights head on the left, & ''FABRICADE DE ARMAS'', ''DE'', ''W.R.KIRSCHBAUM'', ''SOLINGEN''. Worn markings on both sides of pommel. A Rare & unique piece being personally re-chambered by the famous Bill Wescombe. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 600 to 1600
