Remington-Carl Gustaf Stads Arsenal, Model: 1867/89 Swedish Rolling block, Cal: 8x56mmR, MFG: 1868, S/N: 2060, Breech loading single shot rifle, 33 1/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: In the 1860s, both the Norwegian & Swedish government realized their converted percussion lock breech loaders & muzzleloaders were quickly become obsolete with the rise of the metallic cartridge breech loaders. So, in early October of 1866 a joint Swedish & Norwegian arms commission was established in order to select their next rifle & cartridge. They would test the early needle fire guns & repeating guns, but realized the needle fire guns were on their way out & the Repeating arms well they just weren't quite there yet to be a adopted military rifle. Their tests would come down to the Peabody rifle & the Remington Rolling block being both suitable for military use, but with the Remington being the cheaper & simpler rifle, it was adopted for both armies on the 22nd of November 1867. Sweden would buy 10,000 complete rifles from Remington, as well as 20,000 receivers where they would be used make complete rifles in Sweden at Carl Gustaf Stads & Husqvarna. They also obtained licensing rights from Remington so they could produce the rifle themselves at the same arsenals. Sweden would also take the barrels & stocks from old breech loading converted muzzleloaders, & even older muzzleloaders & mate them with a home-made copy of the rolling block action, all of the 20,000 made receivers went to new rifle production. These converted Rolling blocks were made as a stop gap at they were making more true rolling blocks. These rifles would see small updates throughout the years but in 1889 when Sweden adopted the Danish Krag-Jorgensen rifle, they took most of their rolling blocks & rechambered them to the new 8x56mmR by replacing the barrel at Car Gustaf Stads. These updated rolling blocks would be used to fortress guards, coastal artillery units, support units, conscripts, & eventually go into storage as backup weapons. Not many of the 10,000 Remington made rifles are left as they were the first ones made & saw the most action. This one survived long enough to be converted to the new smokeless Krag cartridge & to be put back into storage, one of the few to make it that far.
CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist wood stock is excellent with on a couple minor nicks & dings. The stock was sanded & re-finished at the arsenal when it was re-chambered, leading to the stock markings being faded, & the metal being proud to the wood at the toe. The right cheek of the stock has an embedded brass unit disc that reads ''27R'', ''B'', ''NO.583''. To my understanding this means it was issued to a conscript of the 27th infantry regiment, rifle number 583. The right side of the wrist is stamped with a faded inspectors marked that appears to be ''A.V.V.'', ''1868'', & another inspector stamp of ''J.S.''. The left side of the wrist is stamped with the S/N. The left side of the forend is stamped with the S/N, right under the chamber. The right side of the forend is marked ''J.H.'' inspector stamp, ''1895'', ''I.M.'' inspector stamp. This is the year it was re-chambered. The blued finish on the barrel rates 95% with light wear. The case-hardened finish on the receiver rates 90% with spots of wear, scratches, & a few spots starting to tone brown. the upper wrist tang is stamped ''REMINGTON'', their address & patents. The main rolling block pins are marked ''S'', ''H'' respectively. the left flat of the barrel is stamped with the S/N. The top flat is stamped with a crown over ''C'', ''J.B.'', ''G.M.''. the right flat is marked ''19307/95''. This is the serial number of the new barrel & date of barrel MFG. S/N matching buttplate, both rolling blocks, & nose cap. The bore is excellent, near MINT. Its bright & mirrorlike with little to no visible wear. The barrel holds a large barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight marked 300 to 600 on the base & 7 to 16 on the ladder. Rifle has volley sights that consist of right offset front post on the rear barrel band, & an extra notch offset to the right of the ladder slider. Volley sight range markings are on the back of the ladder & upside down. They are 17 to 24. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned brown with spots of wear showing gun metal gray. Rifle has both bottom sling loops & has the cleaning/clearing rod. The rifle also comes with the correct socket bayonet, socket is marked ''1 R. B.'', ''NO2070''. The blade extension is marked ''8697''. a very rare & high quality, old surplus rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 800 to 2500
