Description

RARE!!, Westley Richards & CO., Model: O.V.S. Martini-Henry, 1892 GA Fichardt batch, Cal: .577/450 Martini-Henry, MFG: 1892, S/N: 1128, Lever action single shot, 33 1/2'' barrel.

HISTORY: This rifle is parts of a batch of 1000 Westly Richards Martini-Henrys delivered to the O.V.S. (Oranje Vrij Staat, ''Orange Free state'', sometimes mentioned ''O.F.S.'') in 1892, by GA Fichardt. As stated in ''WESTLEY RICHARDS, From flintlocks to Monkey tails & Manjuba Martinis'' by Ron Bester. GA Fichardt was a well-known free state businessman in the Orange free state. This 1,000 gun order consisted of 500 long rifles & 500 carbines. Ga Fichardt bought these from Westley Richards & sold them to the O.V.S. They were marked on the barrel with the name of his business ''Fichardt & Co.'' & with the city it was in ''Bloemfontein''. The stock would be marked ''O.V.S.''. GA Fichardt would deliver 1600 more Westley Richards Martini-Henrys to the O.V.S. from 1895 to 1897, these were not marked with his name but have the standard ''O.V.S.'' stamp on the left side of the receiver. This rifle here is one of the 500 long rifles delivered in 1892.

CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist walnut stock is good with numerus nicks, dings, chips, scratches & wear from use/age. Stock has spots darken from oil, mainly where metal meets the wood. Chip in the wood on the top of the wrist where it meets the receiver, whole top of the wrist has a chunk missing. The wood has shrunk over time & the metal is proud to the wood around the buttplate. No visible ''O.V.S.'' marking on the stock. stock has heavy wear & the markings has likely worn away, this is an old replaced stock that did not get re-marked. The metal has completely toned to a brown patina with spots of scratches & wear exposing gun metal gray. Metal has spots of roughness. The left side of the receiver is marked ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO.'', ''BIRMINGHAM'', & the S/N on the bottom left corner. The bottom of the receiver, right under the S/N stamp, is marked ''2684'', marking is faded. The left rounded edge of the receiver has a faded British crossed swords proof. The right side of the receiver is marked ''MARTINI PATENT''. The Knox form is marked ''1892'' in a triangle. The rear left of the barrel is marked with two British crossed sword proofs, the ''52'' bore measurement in gauge, & British crown proof, & ''HENRY RIFLING''. The top of the barrel, just in front of the rear barrel band, is marked ''MADE FOR G.A. FICHARDT & CO. BLOEMFONTEIN''. The bore is good, near very good. Its bright with strong rifling, has some roughness & spots of light pitting. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a tangent ladder V-notch rear sight marked 1 to 4 on the base & 6 to 18 on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate, has pitting scars & is toned brown. the rifle has both bottom sluing loops & has a cleaning/clearing rod. Not many of these rifles were made & the majority have been lost to time making these rifles RARE!. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2500
