British, Model: 1873 Martini-Henry Commercial Carbine, possible OVS Boer rifle, Cal: .577/450 Martini-Henry, MFG: 1870s, S/N: None, lever action single shot rifle, 21 3/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle presents as a Commercial made Martini Henry rifle that was bought by the OVS (Orange Free State). It is hand etched on the bottom of the wrist the name ''G.A.J. WHITE''. This is in the style of Boer rifles as the soldier owned their rifle & could customize them as the pleased. The OVS would buy batches of rifles & sell them to the soldiers. The 1873 Patent mark on the side must be for the 1873 update to martini with a strengthened striker & a re-configured breech block. The cosigner states that this rifle came out of a collection of other Boer rifles that he bought from a Boer rifle collector out of Australia.
CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various nicks, dings, scuffs, & scratches from use/age. Stock has dark oil stain spots, mostly where metal meets the wood but is dotted around the whole stock. Mark 1 & 2 style pinned forearm. The bottom of the wrist is hand etched ''G.A.J. WHITE''. The metal has toned into a mix of dark brown patina & gun metal gray. The metal has a pretty consistent covering of light roughness/cleaned pitting. The left side of the receiver is marked with the Martini ''Squiggle'' commercial trademark, ''PATENT'', ''1873''. The curved corner of the left top side of the receiver is marked with a worn British crossed sword proof. The left rear of the barrel is marked with two British crossed sword proofs, the ''52'' bore measurement in gauge, & another British proof. All markings worn & hard to read. The bore is good. Its bright with thinned rifling & roughness. Rifle is missing the front sight, still has base. Rear sight is a tangent ladder V-notch marked 100 to 300 on the base, ladder markings are mostly worn away. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned brown with light rust. The rifle has a front sling loop & a rear sling stud. Has the cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 400 to 800
