Societe Anonyme Ernesto Breda, Brescia Italy, Model: Y1904/14/27 Mannlicher-Schonauer, Cal: 6.5x54mm Mannlicher, MFG: 1927, S/N: 9085 (Gamma Prefix), bolt action rifle, 29'' barrel.
HISTORY: After the Asia Minor Campaign (Greco-Turkish war) between 1919-22. The Greeks were in dire need of more weapons since almost half of their guns were captured by the Turks. They only had about 100,000 rifles left for their entire army. They would turn to Breda in Italy for new rifles. From 1927-30 the Greeks would receive around 100,000 Breda marked Y1903/14 rifles, & 10,000 carbines. There is a hangup on why the Breda were making the rifles not Styer in Austria. One belief is that Breda was using Austrian captured/ War reparations after WW1, parts & machinery to make the rifles. The more probable story is Breda acted as a mediate between Styer & the Greeks to circumvent the treaty restrictions with the Austrian weapon manufacturers put on them after WW1. The parts would be made at Steyr, shipped to Breda, the guns would then be assembled & stamped Breda therefore making it an Italian rifle, not Austrian. Or all the parts were made in Italy & Styer just took a licensing cut for their rifle design & a cut for negotiating the contract. These are exact copies of the Styer Made Y1903/14 rifles, just with different markings.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip walnut stock is very good. stock has been sanded & oiled. Buttplate is proud to the wood around the toe. Two notches have been cut around the stock (not the upper handguard) at the forend. the right cheek of the stock is marked with a faded S/N marking, does not look to be the rifles S/N. the right cheek has barely visible round Greek acceptance cartouche. The blued metal finish rates 80% overall with spots starting to tone to a brown patina, & spots of wear/thinned finish. The left side of the receiver is marked with a small proof, ''BREDA 1927''. The top of the receiver ring is marked with the Greek crest over ''Y:1903/14''. The right side of the receiver ring is marked with the S/N, Prefixed with the Greek letter Gamma ''r''. rear barrel band marked with an arrow symbol on top. S/N matching bolt, all bolt components do match. The bore is good. Its bright but has consistent roughness throughout. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a tangent V-notch rear sight marked 2 to 20. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate. buttplate has wear & spots of patina. The rifle has both bottom sling loops. Missing cleaning rod. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 600 to 1800
