HISTORY: The Mauser 71 was Prussia's first metallic cartridge rifle & the very first in the long line of the renown Mauser family of bolt action rifles. The Mauser 71 was developed by two of the Mauser brother, Peter & Wilhelm. Wilhelm handed the Business side of the factory while Paul did most of the technical & design work. Wilhelm would later die of health problems in January of 1882 at the age of 47. Paul would carry on developing the Mauser system into the models that dominated the worlds military markets for decades. The Mauser 71 was the first rifle military rifle in Europe to be produced using the American assembly line system using interchangeable parts, instead of hand fitting the rifles. Still the Germans wanted to avoid fitment issues & marked almost every part with a S/N or partial S/N even most of the screws.

CONDITION: the straight wrist wood stock is good near very good. stock has numerus nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. It appears to have been lightly sanded & oiled. There are two cartouches on the right cheek, two on the bottom of the wrist, & two more on the belly of the stock. All cartouches are worn/faded but still visible. The blued barrel has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina, there are some spots of thinned finish remaining. The receiver is correctly left in the white. The receiver is starting to tone to a brown patina. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, ''I.G.Mod.71''. The right side of the receiver is marked with three imperial German proofs, ''1877'', & another ''1877'' stamp that indicates it was sent back to a arsenal & re-worked/re-furbished in 1877. The left side of the barrel is marked with the S/N. the top is marked with a crown over ''AMBURG'', & the right side is marked with five imperial German proofs. Buttplate has the unit marking ''3 LR3 3'', ''7'' marking is worn & half faded. All visible S/N marked parts matching except the bolt retention screw & washer, both mismatched even to each other, & the rear trigger guard screw. Brass trigger guard. The bore is very good. Its bright with consistent light roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a Rear V-notch flip up ladder & leaf combo. The ladder is marked 5 to 16, sliding sleeve on ladder has 11 & 12 marked notches. The sleeve is still tight on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate. The buttplate is left in the white & has a light patina speckling. Rifle has both sling loops. Rifle is missing the cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 400 to 800
