German (Uruguay), Model I.G. Mod 71/94 Dovitis Mauser, Cal: 6.5x53.5mmSR Daudeteau. MFG: 1879, S/N: 69257, Bolt action single shot rifle. 31 1/2'' barrel.
HISTORY: The story of this rifle starts with Antonio Dovitis, he was a Italian tailor and merchant of military supplies in Montevideo, who wound up with the job of procuring some new arms for the Uruguayan military. He got a bunch of single shot 11mm Mauser 1871 rifles, obsolescent by the 1890s. In 1895 he made a deal with the St. Denis arsenal in France to re-barreled 10,000 Mauser 71 rifles to the new French 6.5mm Daudeteau Cartridge, a high velocity smallbore, smokeless round. When they were made, they were switched from rifles to carbines, carbines to rifles, & no rematching of parts made, making most of them have mixed parts. When Uruguay received these rifles they were not too pleased & wanted a repeating rifle to keep up with the other nations. They were quickly scrapped & Uruguay made some room in their budget & bought new M1895 pattern Mausers. A unique rifle with a mix of German & French markings for the Uruguay army.
CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is good with numerus nicks, dings, chips, gouges, & scratches from use/age. Stock has no visible cracks the top of the wrist is stamped F. The blued metal finish on the barrel rates 90% having full coverage but is thinning with brown patina at the muzzle. The receiver was blued when it was converted at St. Denis & rates 85% with some thinning. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, ''I.G. MOD. 71''. The right side of the receiver is marked with three imperial German proofs, ''1879'', ''82''. The ''82'' indicates it was re-worked/re-furbished at a arsenal in 1882 (when it was in German service). The top of the barrel is marked ''L.F.t.P'', ''St. Denis''. All parts S/N mismatched. The bolt components are a mix of matching & mismatched S/Ns. brass trigger guard. The bore is very good near excellent. Bright with strong rifling, but with consistent very light roughness throughout. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. Base marked 4 to 8, ladder marked 9 to 20. The stock carries a steel buttplate, left in the white & toning to a brown patina. Rifle has both sling loops & a brass tipped cleaning rod. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1500
