Amberg Arsenal (Bavaria), Model: I.G. 71/84 Mauser, Commercial carbine, Cal: 11x60mmR Mauser, MFG: 1887, S/N: 62695, Bolt action rifle, 24'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle appears to be a Commercially made carbine, intended to be a cheap hunting rifle. The military never made nor converted these rifles into carbines since they were tube magazine fed, cutting down the length also cuts down your ammo capacity. Large amounts of these were sold in Canada & Bannerman in the US. The conversion done is very professional & must have been at a factory where they were set up to do just that. This could have been done in Germany, over in Canada by a exporter, or by bannerman here in the state. The mostly likely option is that it was sold in Cananda since they got the lions share of surplus 71/84 rifles & dominion, a Canadian ammo company was making ammo for the rifle clear up to the 1950s.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various nicks, dings, & scratches from use/age. There is a 2 hairline crack on the bottom of the forend emanating from the magazine cap. This is the original Military stock that was shortened. The stock from the barrel-band back appears to never have been sanded & re-finished as the cartouches are all clearly visible & crisp, other than the cartouches on the bottom of the wrist, but this appears to be from handling wear. The left cheek of the stock has a bunch of ''X'' & ''XX'' stamps. The left side of the stock above the trigger has another ''XX'' stamp. The blued metal finish on the barrel rates 90% with a few small scratches, spots of thinning/wear, mainly focused by the chamber. The receiver is correctly left in the white & has a light patina speckling. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, & ''I.G.Mod.71/84'' in German script. the right side of the receiver is marked with a German imperial proof & ''1887''. The left side of the barrel is marked with the S/N, a small crown proof, a crown over ''L'' proof, & another small crown proof. The top of the barrel is marked with a crown over ''AMBERG''. The right side of the barrel has four crown proofs. S/N matching bolt & rear sight, all other marked parts are mismatched & a mix. The bore is very good. Its bright & mirror like with light roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 4 to 16. The stock carries a bare steel buttplate. buttplate has light roughness & patina. The rifle has the original rear sling loop on the trigger guard, but no forward sling mount. A very unique & interesting, commercially made military sporter rifle. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 350 to 750
