Description

Deutsche Waffen-Und Munitionsfabriken (DWM), Model: M1896 Boer Mauser ZAR contract, Cal: 7x57mm Mauser, MFG: 1896-97, S/N: 1918, Bolt action rifle, 29 '' barrel.

HISTORY: This rifle has a unique & long history. first it was part of the second contract of 2000 Mausers ordered by the ZAR government on the 13th of February 1897. These would be some of the first guns marked DWM since the merger of Ludwig Loewe & Deutsche Metallparonenfabrik, creating Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken in late 1896. This rifle has brass plaque on the stock that reads ''CAPT. W.J. REID'', ''FROM CAPT. A.H. KING R.C.D.'', ''MAUSER CAPTURED FROM P. JOUBERT'', ''SWARTZKOPPIES S.A.''. It was presented as a war trophy to Captain W.J. Reid, E Squadron of the Canadian mounted rifles. it was presented to him by Captain A.H. King of the royal Canadian dragoons. Captain A.H. King is on the role of the Canadian scouts & served as a Lieutenant in the 1st Canadian Hussars & Royal Canadian Dragoons. W.J Weid would join as a private to E Squadron of the 2nd Regiment Canadian mounted rifles. The 2nd regiment sailed to south Africa on 1-14-1902 & the unit was posted to the western Transvall. In April of 1902 they would engage in battle with the Boers at Brakspruit. P. Joubert is not noted as a solider that fought where it was captured from Swartzkoppies S.A. (South Africa). This could be for Piet Joubert who was Commandant General of the Z.A.R. forces, second in command to the president. I doubt that this is his personal weapon but likely means it was captured from a soldier under his command. This rifle was presented to W.J. Weid long after the Boer war as he was promoted to Captain in 1910 & the second Boer war ended in 1902. W.J. Weid would pass this rifle down to his family until it was donated Western University of Ontario by a family member. it would preside in the Museum of the University until the Museum closed where it was sold to a private seller. This rifle comes with a bunch of extra information & pictures about the rifle, where it came from & information on the people. (this info is available to look at upon request while the auction is up).

CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with numerus small nicks, dings, dents, scratches from use/age. A couple dark oil stains on buttstock by buttplate. The left cheek of the stock has a large etched diamond with two horizontal lines through the bottom half. The right cheek of the stock has a 1 '' by 3 '' brass plaque inlayed that reads (see caption above). Under the plaque, stamped into the wood is ''WM. A. BROCK'', ''LONDON ONT'' (this is most likely the engraver of the plaque). The S/N is stamped into the stock on the left side of the stock, just below the S/N mark on the receiver. The number ''J20161'' is marked in white paint on the right side of the stock just above the trigger; this is a control number for the western university museum of Ontario. The blued metal finish retains almost full coverage but is toning to a brown patina with light speckled rust. Protected areas still show original blue. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N right next to a crown proof, ''DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN'', ''BERLIN''. S/N matching magazine floor plate & trigger guard. S/N mismatched bolt & cleaning rod. All bolt component S/Ns match. The bore is very good. Its bright with some roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip-up ladder V-notch rear sight marked 4 to 20. The stock carries a steel buttplate. Buttplate is starting to tone to a brown patina. The rifle has both bottom sling loops & has a cleaning rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 3000 to 6000
