Both outside edges of the stock where the upper handguard meets the stock have been sanded/worn down. Unmarked unit disc in right cheek of stock. Three worn German cartouches on right cheek just behind the unit disc; Two more on the bottom of the wrist & three on the belly of the stock. The blued metal finish on the barrel retains about 70% coverage with areas thinning, toning to a brown patina, or just worn gray. Buttplate is toning to a brown patina. rifle has both bottom sling loops, has the cleaning rod, & comes with a Ersatz Bayonet with sheath & frog. A Ersatz bayonet is a substitute bayonet made in Germany during the early years of WW1 because there weren't enough regulation bayonets to equip the rapidly expanding army. They were made in small local workshops & the only specifications for the bayonets was to have a 12'' blade & mount to the Gew 98. Because of this many different variations were made. These would be replaced by regulation bayonets once production caught up & the ersatz bayonets would be sold off. The vast majority made their way to turkey where they would shorten the blades to around 10'' (like the one here) these are called ''Turked'' ersatz bayonets. They bayonet is marked on the guard ''1912''. a rare unmolested Gew 98 in all original configuration with only one mismatched part. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 2500
