Description

Nippon Special Steel Company, Model: Type 99 Long Training rifle, Cal: 6.5x50SR BLANKS/ TRAINER AMMO ONLY, MFG: 1939-45, S/N: 7233 (under barrel), Bolt action rifle, 31 '' barrel.

HISTORY: Japanese arsenals & company would make many training rifles based off their type 38 & 99 rifles. These were used in schools to train students in military drill since at this time Japanese society was all about military service. These were only meant to be used will blanks/ special gallery ammo & were not proofed to fire normal ball ammo. Because they were to only fire blanks they were made smooth bore. They would both be newly made rifles, or re-purposed, worn-out military rifles converted into trainers. Both newly made rifles & re-purposed rifles are seen with a mix of military rifle parts & lower quality parts made for just the trainer rifles. The stock & rear sight on this rifle are a perfect example of lower quality trainer only parts. The buttstock is one piece where the military buttstocks are two, & the rear sight is a different style & is cruder than the military sights. Nippon Special Steel company's trainer rifles are known to higher quality than many other Manufactures trainer rifles.

CONDITION: the semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good with various nicks, dings, dents, scratches from use/age. The blue metal finish rates 80% on the receiver with areas of thinning & spots toning to a brown patina. The metal finish rates 93% on the barrel is a few light scratches. The top of the receiver is marked with the Nippon Special Steel Company logo, three intertwined circles with a ''#'' symbol in the middle. The number ''7233'' is stamped on the barrel under the stock. The bore is, the barrel holds barley corn front sight with a flip up ladder aperture rear sight marked 3 to 17. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate with spots of wear & patina. Tape on buttplate. The rifle has a cleaning rod & both bottom sling swivels. A Excellent example of a Japanese School trainer rifle. WARNING, THESE RIFLES WERE DESIGNED & PROOFED TO FIRE BLANKS & SPECIAL LOW PRESSURE GALLERY AMMO, DO NOT FIRE STANDARD BALL AMMO OUT OF THIS RIFLE. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 100 to 400
