RARE & FANTASTIC, Colt, Model Dragoon 1st Model, CAL: .44, MFG: 1848-50 SN: 3223, Single Action Percussion Revolver, 7 1/2'' barrel. The Colt Dragoon 1st Model, a .44 caliber percussion revolver, was a popular firearm during the 1850s & 1860s, particularly among U.S. Dragoons & civilian pioneers. It was known for its robust construction & reliability in the harsh conditions of the frontier. The 1st Model featured a shortened barrel & cylinder compared to earlier models, making it more manageable & easier to carry. Key features of the Colt Dragoon 1st Model: Caliber: .44, Barrel Length: 7 1/2 inches, Cylinder: 6-shot, Trigger Guard, Square back, brass, Frame: Color case-hardened steel, Grip: One-piece walnut, Loading Lever Catch: A simple spring catch under the barrel to prevent the lever from falling during firing. The 1st Model Dragoon was issued to the U.S. Mounted Rifles (USMR), also known as the Dragoons, in the antebellum era & during the Civil War. Until some Colt M-1851 Navy revolvers were ordered in 1855, the Dragoon remained the only revolver in significant numbers to be in use with the US military. There are portraits of Confederate & Union cavalrymen with various Dragoon models. The Dragoon was a favorite among Texas Rangers & 49ers during the California Gold Rush. The Dragoon's rugged design & reliability made it well-suited for frontier use. Colts Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, & it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, & it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you because of its significant weight. Colt only produced about 7,000 of these 1st models from 1848-50, with this pistol being produced the first year (1848) & just one year after the Walkers. The wood grips are very good, displaying numerous minor contusions, rubs & nicks, all of which have smoothed with age & use. The case-hardened metal finish has worn to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. The brass trigger guard/grip display fantastic age & patina. The cylinder displays the faint remains of Texas Ranger & Indian fight scene. Stamped ''ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY'' along the top of the barrel. Left side of frame stamped ''COLT PATENT U.S.''. Matching SN visible on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, & back strap. Bore is very good. The barrel features a German silver blade front sight & hammer notch rear sight. Cylinder slips on advancement as it has a missing or broken hand-spring. A rarely seen Dragoon survivor & one with strong authentic eye appeal. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique & not a reproduction. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 6000 to 10000
