Description

London Colt, 1849 Pocket Pistol, CAL: 31, MFG: 1863, SN: 226410, Single Action Revolver, 6'' octagon barrel.

HISTORY: The M1849 Colt Pocket was the most successful percussion handgun produced by Colt, more than 325,000 were manufactured in the United States from 1850 -1873. Another appx. 11,000 were produced at Colts London factory. London produced guns were short-lived, being manufactured circa 1853 to 1856. Appx. 11,000 guns were ''produced'' at the London factory. The earliest ''London'' Colt Pockets were produced in the Hartford factory, however the London factory quickly started to assemble guns from American made parts. Research says that the first London Colt Pockets that were completely made in London, from parts made in the London factory, were not available until February of 1854. The London produced guns did have some differences from the Hartford produced guns. Most of the London guns were produced with iron triggerguards & backstraps rather than brass. With this example being produced in 1863, they used the later marking that Colt used to designate pistols that were to be sent off to England. Earlier examples with use the ''E'' prefix or suffix to a serial number meant ''England'', & did not mean ''engraved''. Somewhere around 1862-1863 Colt changed the letter prefix/suffix to ''L'' for London, on the export guns & would go on to use ''E'' for Engraved. It is clear from the markings that this example was intended to make its way over seas.

CONDITION: The top of the barrel is marked ''ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA.'' The left side of the frame is marked in two lines ''COLTS PATENT''. The left side of the trigger guard is marked ''31 CAL''. The full SN can be found on the bottom of the barrel, frame, trigger guard & butt. All examples are ''226410/L'', with the exception of the SN on the bottom of the barrel which is marked ''L/226410''. The original wood grips are very good. There is a small edge chip on the bottom of the right grip, amongst other contusions, scrapes & dings. The original finish is present, with protective oils added over time, contributing to darkening. The metal blue finish on the barrel & cylinder has fully toned to an even chocolate brown patina, with remnants of original blue. The case-hardened frame has also fully toned to a brown patina, with some shadowing remaining from case-colors. The brass trigger guard has an aged patina. Bore is good, with roughness & pitting. Small notch rear sight & flatened brass cone front sight. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 600 to 1000
