UNIQUE, Colt 1849 Pocket, CAL: 31, MFG: 1862, SN: 218006, Single Action Revolver, 4'' octagon barrel. According to the consignor, this example came out of Sonora, Mexico (date unknown). The top the barrel is faintly marked ''ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA.''. The SN can be seen on the bottom of the barrel, frame & trigger guard. The SN on the butt has been buffed off, but remnants of the ''21'' can be seen. There are faint British proofs on the bottom left flat of the barrel & remains of proofs between the nipples on the cylinder. The wood grips are good & solid. They appear to be heavily sanded & also may have shrunk over time being in the hot southern climate. There are smoothed contusions, scrapes & dings, with protectiove oils added over time. The metal finish has fully worn to metal gray & toned to a dark brown patina. The brass trigger guard has an aged patina, with areas of oxidization & numerous chatter marks throughout. Bore is poor, dark & rough throughout. Smal notch rear sight & flatened brass front sight. A procedure called crosshatching was performed on the frame, cylinder & barrel. Crosshatching involves drawing, or in this case, carving two or more sets of parallel lines that intersect or cross each other. Silver was applied to the crosshatching using the Koftgari technique. The art of Koftgari is a type of Indian damascene technique used to decorate arms & weaponry. It is an overlay art in which the surface is cut with crosshatches & silver or gold wire is then pressed into the surface with a special tool. It is not inlaid metal ornamentation, on the contrary it lays on the surface of the iron & is mechanically bound through pressing, burnishing, and polishing. Koftgari comes from Persian & Urdu kuft-gari meaning beaten work & the artisan is called a kuftgar or gilder. Historically, koftgari was brought to India by Persian craftsmen with Mughal rulers in the 16th century. This revolver comes complete with a small custom wood kit that holds a small zinc powder flask, a bullet mould, a tin of caps, a tin of balls & some patches. The top of the kit is supposed to have a leather lid, but was torn off some time ago. Additionally, this revolver is accompanied by an unmarked leather holster & belt. A unique Civil War era pistol that presents well. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1500 to 2500
