SCARCE, John Harvey, Top-Hat Muff Pistol, CAL: 44 C&B, MFG: c.1820's, SN: NONE, Single Shot Percussion Pistol, 2'' barrel.
HISTORY: A ''muff pistol'' is a small, concealable pistol, typically designed for women in the 18/19th century, that could be hidden inside a muff (a hand warmer) or pocket, allowing them to carry a weapon discreetly; the name directly refers to its intended hiding place.
MARKINGS: The left side of the frame is marked ''HARVEY'' & the right side of the frame is marked ''EXETER''. The bottom of the barrel & frame have proofs. Both sides & the underbelly of the brass frame are nicely engraved with decorative patterns around the trigger & flag/scroll engraving on the side plates.
CONDITION: The original wood grips are excellent. There are minor contusions & scrapes. There is a small gap between the grips & the frame on both sides. The metal surfaces have fully worn to metal gray, with spotting toned to a brown patina. Bore is excellent. Produced with no sights. Mechanical operation appears to function properly. The trigger unfolds from the bottom of the frame when the hammer is fully cocked. The safety only functions in the half-cocked position. A neat little pistol from the early 1800's.
