British Government, New Land Pattern (Paget) Tower Flintlock, CAL: 65, MFG: 1808, SN: NONE, Single Shot Flintlock Pistol, 8 1/2'' barrel.
HISTORY: The story of the New Land Pattern pistols begins in the early 1800's. Dragoon regiments were still equipped with flintlock pistols that were introduced in the mid 1700's. The pistol that evolved was the New Land Pattern (Pagent) Light Dragoon flintlock. Similar to its predecessor, it had an additional feature that set it apart & kept it as a cavalry side-arm for many years to come. The design of the stirrup ramrod is usually attributed to General Henry Paget, who at the time, was the Colonel of the crack 7th Light Dragoons. He had a keen interest in arming his troopers with the very best weapons. In 1808, Tower produced 5,000 of these new pistols. The New Land Pattern pistol had a long period of use, lasting until changes of policy revoked troopers of their pistols in the 1840's.
MARKINGS: Right Lock Plate: ''CROWN/GR'', small ''CROWN/BROAD ARROW'', ''TOWER'' marked on the tail of the lock. Barrel: right side''CROWN/11'' & left side ''CROWN/GR/BROAD ARROW'' over ''CROWN/??/X''. Upper Tang: ''CROWN/15''. Trigger Guard: ''CD/33'' (Dragoons). Left Flat of Stock: Point to Point Broad Arrow signifying Government Sale.
CONDITION: The wood stock is good & solid. There is a small crack coming off the back of the right lock plate & numerous contusions, dings & scrapes throughout. The barrel, lock plate & action components have all worn to metal gray, with spotting & wear marks toned to a brown patina. Brass hardware has an aged patina & has similar wear as the rest of the pistol. Bore is fair, consistently rough, with pitting towards the muzzle. Produced with no sights. An interesting & neat history on a 225 year old flintlock pistol. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 800 to 1400
