Simeon North, U.S Model 1816, CAL: 54, MFG: 1817-20, SN: NONE, Percussion Single Shot Pistol, 9'' barrel.
HISTORY: The North Model 1816 Army pistols resulted from a contract bewteen Simeon North & the War Department dating back to April of 1813, calling for 20,000 .69cal flintlock pistols. A of January 1816, only 629 pistols had been delivered (those are referred to today as the Model 1813). The contract was altered, with the most important revision being the change from .69cal to .54cal. Between 1817 & 1820, 19,374 Model 1816 flintlock pistols were delivered at a cost of $16 per pair. Many examples are known today with various state markings. The majority of these pistols were altered to percussion in the 1850's, & few may have seen limited service early in the Civil War.
MARKINGS: The right side plate is faintly marked ''S. NORTH'' over a spread eagle that splits the letters ''U'' on the left & ''S'' on the right, over ''MIDLn CON.''. The left barrel flat is marked ''P/US''.
CONDITION: The original wood stock is good & solid. There are multiple small cracks on the left flat & other contusions, dings & scrapes. The metal surfaces have all worn to metal gray & toned to a brown patina, with consistent spotting & pitting throughout. Bore is poor, dark & pitted. Small blade front sight on barrel band. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 900
