Winchester, Model 1873, 3rd Variation, Marked .44 W.C.F. Cal., MFG: 1888, SN: 286503B, Lever Action Rifle, 24'' Octagon barrel, Full mag. The original straight grip wood stock & forend are good & solid, with numerous scratches, scrapes, gouges & contusions to the wood & original worn thin finish. There is a thin missing sliver of wood missing from the lower right edge at the wrist & glued 6'' crack on the right side of the forend. The metal blue finish has worn & been polished away leaving most areas in the white, with some thin brown patina on the barrel. There is cleaned pitting on the barrel & mag tube. Mag tube retention loop is loose in the dovetail. The loading gate retains some original blued finish. Bore is fair, with lots of cleaned roughness amongst thinning rifling. The barrel holds an adjustable rear sight & blade front sight, with the blade being replaced with a homemade copper blade. Stock carries a sliding trapdoor smooth crescent metal buttplate. Dust cover is missing. Tight action. A solid antique 1873 rifle that in my opinion is a candidate & would benefit from some restoration. Great project rifle, at an affordable value spread.
