ODDITY Remington, Model 81, .22-250 REM. CAL., MFG. 1945, SN: 23373, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' barrel. This rifle is very unique as it has undergone a restoration & conversion. The rifle started life in 300 Savage caliber & is factory marked as such on the barrel bell. Over the span of 45 years of collecting these rifles as a family, we have encountered a handful of these rifles. The story as shared with us as to how these 22-250 rifles came to be is unique. Apparently there was a southern Oregon gunsmith who was known to convert Remington model 8 rifle into 22-250 & 300 Sav. calibers before Remington ever produced the 300 Sav. caliber in their Model 81 rifles. It was a Remington factory rep. during his business travels that stumbled onto one of these rifles & the gentleman who had converted it. He was so impressed with the 300 Sav. version that he asked to borrow the rifle to take it back to Remington's head quarters to be tested for possible factory production. Remington's R&D & their Brass, were also so impressed, that the 300 Sav. caliber soon became a regular offering within the Model 81 production. Although this is obviously not one of the those conversion 300 Sav. rifles, rather it was a factory 300 Sav. that was likely converted to the 22-250 caliber by this same gunsmith. The few that I have encountered or heard of, had their caliber marking changed from the original, which is not the case with this rifle, therefore retaining the original 300 Sav. factory stamping. According to the consignor, this rifle was tested & verified by his gunsmith as correctly fitting, firing & functioning as a 22-250. However, we have not verified or tested the rifle ourselves. Also the story of its possible origins & conversion is simple the sharing of information as shared with us. The original flat pistol grip wood stocks are excellent, having been cleaned & refinished, with some thinning in the carry areas. There are tiny to minor handling marks, scrapes & contusions remaining. The metal blue finish was professionally restored, with 95% coverage. There is some cleaned speckling & a bit of spotty orange peel under the blue in areas. The barrel carries the standard front & rear sights. Bore is excellent, clean & bright. Stock carries the original Remington checkered metal buttplate. 5 rd fixed magazine. Sling swivels in stock & forend. A very unique & overall excellent condition 81 rifle, which likely has collectible interest to 8 & 81 collectors or fans of the 22-250 caliber. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 600 to 1200
