FANTASTIC NICKEL ENGRAVED Winchester, Model 1890 2nd model, .22 WRF Cal., MFG. 1907, SN: 329524, Pump Action Rifle, 24'' Tapered Octagon barrel, The receiver, barrel & trigger guard are elaborately scroll engraved, with forest scenes depicting two squirrels on the left side of the receiver & three rabbits on the right side. This engraving is as shown on pg. 125 of ''Winchester - An American Legend'' by R. L. Wilson as being Winchesters No. 8 style, ''Especially suitable for rifles having small frames, such as the Model 1890 & the Single Shot''. Band & small scroll engraving is displayed on all flats of the barrel, with additional 1'' scroll on four side flats & 2'' of scrolls on the top flat beyond the caliber marking. Neither the top of the receiver or the barrel are proof stamped as you would expect on a factory engraved rifle. The deluxe original capped pistol gripped walnut stock has Winchester' fancy ''H'' style hand checkering. The stock exhibits fantastic grain. There is a dowel sized repair (restoration), one on each side of the wrist, where a pin through the wrist once resided for known reason. Does not appear that it was necessary for stability, as the wrist is structurally sound. However, there is a small 1'' tight stress crack off the left side of the upper tang & running downward into the checkering on the wrist. The stock appears to carry an added layer of finish, likely added at the time of the wrist restoration. The corncob forearm & its finish appear original with use thinning of the finish & darkening at areas of finish loss. Overall, the socks present very well. The metal blue finish appears to have been restored, rating 90% on the barrel & mag tube, with some spotting, speckling or light pitting in areas. The nickel on the receiver rates excellent, with some thinning on the sides & inside the trigger guard. Bore is excellent. Factory front & rear sights. The left side of the lower tang under the wood is stamp ''3925X'', the ''X'' marking it as a deluxe wood rifle. The ''3925'' is also stamped on the buttend of the wood stock & on the inside of the buttplate. These numbers are the first four digits of the SN, but oddly stamped ''3925'' rather than the ''3295'' of the actual SN. There is some question to whether this rifle was factory engraved or the professional Custom engraving of a factory deluxe rifle. It is honestly very difficult to determine from simple examination. The engravings & stampings are sharp as you'd expect from the factory. If it is custom engraving outside the factory, the current blue would have been done after the engraving. Without the proof a factory standard or deluxe rifle, one would infer that the receiver was pulled from standard production before proof stamping for factory custom shop engraving. Regardless, it is truly a wonderful nickeled engraved 1890 rifle, that presents very sharply & is in excellent condition. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 5000 to 8000
