Description

RARE Winchester, Model 1890 SOLID FRAME 1st variation (Antique), Marked .22 SHORT Cal., MFG. 1891, SN: 537, Pump Action Rifle, Rare 24 1/2'' Octagon tapered barrel, The Model 1890 rifle began production late in 1890, with only 245 rifle made to end that first year. This mid three digit rifle was likely made in January of 1891, making it a very early rifle. It has two very early features that not all 1st variation rifles possess. The first is the 24 1/2'' length barrel, rather than the later 24'' barrels. The second is the 1st barrel inscription sometimes referred to as the broken ''D'' inscription by collectors. The broken ''D'' refers to the fact that the ''D'' in manufactured is not complete due to a flaw in the roll dies. The dies were later replaced with a new set of dies producing the same 1st style inscription, but with a complete ''D'' stamping. These early features are discussed in detail in Ned Schwing's book 'Winchester Slide-Action Rifles'. The original wood stocks are very good & solid, retaining much of the original finish, with an added layer of finish. There is a bit of fill restoring the right edge of the lower tang. There are several minor scratches, scrapes & contusions. The metal blue finish on barrel remains at 40%, while the mag is mostly covered with a brown patina. The case-hardened receiver, hammer & trigger guard & their case-colors have worn & faded to a gun metal gray. Bore is fair, with roughness amongst worn thin rifling. The barrel carries a fixed rear sight & an elongated blade front sight. Tight action. A very collectible early 1st variation, in short only caliber & with rare very early features. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 800 to 1500
