Asa. Story, Windor Vermont, Percussion target rifle, Remington barrel, Cal: .38, MFG: 1830's-40's, S/N: None, Percussion muzzleloader rifle, 28 3/4'' octagon barrel.
HISTORY: Asa Story was one of the more prolific gunmakers that worked in Vermont. He made many types of guns, but was mainly known for his under-hammer guns being one of the few makers of them here in the US from the late 1790's - 1900 era. Under-hammer guns were very popular for target shooting rifles over in the east & they did not see much use on the western frontier. Windor was a very small town (population less than 2,000 in 1855) & Asa Story was the towns first recorded Gunsmith. He would start making guns around 1825 & eventually would bring his two sons, Willam & Pascael into the gun business until 1872 when he died.
CONDITION: The straight wrist, walnut half-stock is very good with small nicks, dings, & scratches from use. There is some finish wear in handling spots & on the sharp corners. There is a 1/2'' tight crack on the top of the wrist, emanating from the wrist tang. Ornate brass patch box in the right cheek of the stock. The left cheek of the stock has a metal medallion with bird & ornate engravings (medallion has a protective lacquer over it). The barrel & lock plate appears to have been left unfinished, has speckled of brown patina & some roughness near the nipple. the rear sight & lock spring have some blue remining. There is some decorative engravings at the rear of the barrel, upper wrist tang, & upper extension of the buttplate. The last 1/2'' of the barrel was turned round & has some ornamental engravings. The top of the barrel is marked ''A.STORY'', ''WINDSOR VT.''. The right rear of the barrel has a very faint ''REMINGTON'' stamp. The crown of the muzzle is marked ''100''. The lock is marked ''D.LOCKE''. This rifle has a unique ''external-lock work'' lock. double set trigger. The bore is good. It's bright with strong rifling & roughness throughout the bore, more concentrated roughness nearing the end of the bore. The barrel holds a brass blade front sight in a dovetail. Elevation & windage adjustable V-notch rear sight that goes over the upper tang of the wrist. The stock carries a steel crescent moon buttplate. Plate is mostly gray with some speckling of brown patina. Rifle has no sling mounts. Rifle has a ramrod. Mechanical function appears solid, the trigger needs to be set in order to fire.
