Description

Hudson Bay Company, Model The Imperial Special, Cal: 26 Ga, MFG: Circa 1870's, S/N: 7409, Percussion Muzzleloader, 36'' 1/3 octagon barrel.

HISTORY: beginning in the 1860's, the Hudson's bay company (HBC) started to introduce Percussion guns to the Indian trade. These still had to look of the early North West Guns they sold going back to the 1600's, but were percussion instead of flintlock. In the 1870s HBC would introduce the new ''The Imperial) line of rifles starting with ''The Imperial Special''. Just like the North west guns they were designed to be short & light to fit the requirements of the Indian fur traders they were mostly doing business with. They had none of the earlier classic HBC characteristics like the Serpent shaped side plate, the only thing to distinguish them is the markings on the barrel & lock plate.

CONDITION: The checkered, straight wrist walnut stock is very good with light nicks, dings, & scratches from use/age. The wood has also slightly shrunk over time leaving the metal proud to the wood around the buttplate & lower tang. Silver medallion embedded into belly of stock. The metal has toned to a chocolate brown patina, with areas of roughness/pitting scars near percussion nipple. The top of the barrel is marked ''THE IMPERIAL SPECIAL''. The marking is faded but still present. The lock plate is marked ''HUDSON BAY Co.'', this marking is worn & the ''BAY Co.'' is heavily faded but still present. The bottom tang is marked with the S/N, again this marking is worn but still present. British BV & BP proofs under barrel. The rear of the barrel, upper tang, trigger guard, lock plate, hammer, buttplate, screws & ram rod escutcheon, all have intricate ornamental engravings. The bore is poor, has rust & pitting. The barrel holds a bead front sight. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned brown with light roughness. Stock has no sling attachments. Gun has a brass tipped, wooden ramrod. Muzzleloader/ Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 600 to 1200
