Description

Westley Richards, Model: M1873 Portuguese Monkey-Tail Artillery carbine, Cal: .451/.483, MFG: 1867, S/N: P/C 702, Capping Breechloader rifle, 18'' barrel.

HISTORY: In 1866, Portugal would order 8000 rifles for the Cacadores regiments, 2000 carbines & 1000 pistols for the Cavalry Two thousand of the rifles would be delivered in 1866, & the rest of the guns were delivered in 1867. The rifles were used until 1872 when they were replaced by Snider converted Enfield rifle. The cavalry would follow in 1873 be replacing their carbines with Snider converted Enfield carbines. The monkey tail carbines were then modified with a bayonet lug & standard sling swivels & issued to the Artillery. The artillery would eventually switch to snider converted Enfield carbines in the later 1870's- early 1880's & these would be shipped to colonial forces before being sold on the surplus market if they survived all of that. Lots of these rifles would be bought by the Boers in south Africa (surplus & new production) during this time where they put them to great use against the superior & outnumbering British with their more advance Martini-Henry, during the first Anglo-Boer war (Dec 1880-March 1881).

CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good as being sanded & refinished leaving only smoothed over deeper nicks & dings, most metal parts are slightly proud to the wood. Left flat of the stock marked ''FA'' over ''1881'' (marking is thinned & partially faded). The ''FA'' is if for ''Fabrica de Armas'', & the date it was returned to the arsenal & refurbished. There should be a older marking from when it was converted into a artillery carbine, but it was likely sanded away when it was re-finished. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina with a added protective brown lacquer that was applied over all the metal & has worn away in spots. There is some roughness around the nipple & slight concentration of roughness across the stock-line. The top of the breech is marked ''WESTLEY RICHARDS'', ''PATENT'', & a triangle. The left side of the chamber is marked with multiple commercial British proofs & the S/N. the rear of the barrel is marked ''.483'', ''WR'', ''WHITWORTH PATENT'', & ''.481''. The lock plate is marked ''1867'' in a triangle, ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO''. S/N matching bayonet lug/ barrel band. The bore is good. Its bright & shiny with roughness throughout the bore & slightly thinned rifling. The barrel holds a small blade on base front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 1 to 4, the ladder is marked 5 to 8. The stock carries a brass buttplate, has patina & ding/wear marks. Rifle has both bottom mounted sling swivels, & comes with a ramrod/cleaning rod (these could be used as a muzzleloader if no cartridges were available), ramrod has some dings to the tip. Mechanical function appears solid, loud strong clicks from the hammer. Antique, No FFL Re - Value: 500 to 1000
