Springfield Armory, M1879 Trapdoor Carbine (presenting as), Cal: 45-70, MFG: 1888, S/N: 412466, Single shot breechloader, 21 3/4'' barrel.
HISTORY: The model 1879 introduced the ''buckhorn'' rear sight to the Springfield as well as some other small internal tweaks to the breech block & action. This sights notch leaf was windage drift adjustable to allowing better zeroing of the rifle, it was not on the fly adjustment as seen on the later Buffington rear sight. The breech blocks would continue to be marked ''1873'' but that marking was removed from the lock plate. This model is also the Transition of the master Armorer at Springfield from Erskine Allin (who came up with the trapdoor conversion) to Samuel W. Porter. This can be seen with both ''ESA'' & ''SWP'' cartouche's seen on the rifles. These were still officially called M1873 by the military but collectors named them M1879's after the year the new sight & modifications were introduced. Older M1873 rifles would also be fitted with the new sight when they went in for refurbishment. This rifle also has a front sight protector & pistol grip added. These are period correct & were made for trapdoors for Military & civilian competition shooting. The pistol grip appears to be a reproduction.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with small nicks, dings, & scratches from use. Stock is a cut down rifle stock with a 4'' wood fill in the cleaning rod channel in the forend of the stock (The buttstock cleaning rod was also introduced by the M1879, does not have it). Small wood fill repair at the forward end of the lock plate cutout. No visible inspector cartouche on the left flat of stock. The bottom of the wrist is stamped with the ''P'' in circle firing proof, toe & heel of the stock are stamped ''28''. The metal carries a arsenal re-finish with thinned markings & spots of roughness under the finish. The blued finish on the barrel rates 80% with some scratches & spots of thinning starting to tone brown. The receiver has toned to a dark patina with light roughness. has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & dark gray patina with light roughness across the metal. Breech block was re-blued (instead of case-hardened) at some point (unknown if its from a arsenal or after the fact) with roughness under the finish, the finish rates 85% with some spots of wear showing gray & is starting to tone brown. The breech block is marked ''US'', over ''MODEL'', over ''1873''. The rear of the receiver has the S/N. right side of the receiver marked ''LCB'' (marking slight obscured by stock). left side of the chamber has the very faint remains of the ''V'', over ''P'', over a eagle's head marking, ''P'' proof under that is thinned but fully present. The lock plate is marked with a American great eagle next to ''US'', over ''SPRINGFIELD'', over ''1873''. Markings are thinned with the eagle barely present. Barrel bands is marked ''U''. Three-click action. The bore is good. It's bright & shiny with thinned rifling & spots of roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with the M1879 notched ramp base/flip up ladder ''buckhorn'' rear sight. Ladder stamped ''C'' for carbine & marked out to 1500 yards. The stock carries a blued steel non-buttplate (should be by the M1879 with a cleaning rod inside). Plate has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. Rifle has a sling bar & ring. Mechanical function appears solid. A nice Springfield trapdoor presenting as a M1879 trapdoor carbine Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 400 to 800
